Van Wormer Resorts Fishing Report 5/18/12   Hola Amigos,   This week down on the East Cape:  Fishing continued to be fairly tough.  This has been the third straight week that fishing has not been up to par.  It hasn’t been for a lack of fish, rather there is just too much food for the fish to eat.  Bait fishermen have been seeing mass amounts of small squid in the water while they are out catching bait.  This would explain why guests are seeing 12 to 15 marlin, but can’t seem to get them to bite.  Some boats were fortunate enough to land up to 4 billfish in a day.  The bite seems to be only 5-8 miles out from Hotel Palmas De Cortez.   We are starting to see some nice schools of Dorado.  Most of the Dorado have been to the north at the shark buoys and further up by the “ocho ocho”.  Those who have gone to the north for Dorado have either landed 6-12 small Dorado or one big 35-50 pound Dorado.  Thursday and Friday seemed to be the best days with a nice 50lb. Dorado caught on the Whiskey (pictured below) and lots more smaller Dorado coming in today.  The Burnette family landed a nice 20lb. Dorado earlier in the week (pictured below).   We also saw some nice Roosterfish this week.  Those who come in shore in the afternoon were rewarded with roosters ranging from 10-55lbs.  Dr. Ray Nizibian from Petaluma, California had an 11 rooster day on the Cruiser “Rosa” early in the week.  Speaking of nice roosters, Jim Goerg of the Pacific Northwest fishing paper “The Reel News” was down at Palmas De Cortez this week with his annual group.  Jim Goerg, Terry Shelly and Jim Tuggle organize a group from the Pacific Northwest each year to fish at Van Wormer Resorts.  This year’s group of 37 invaded Palmas De Cortez on Monday and had a wonderful time even though the fishing was tough.  Jim Goerg was lucky enough to land this beautiful 55lb. Rooster (pictured below) while fishing onboard the cruiser “Pez Vela”.  The rooster bite seems to be from 11am-4pm close to shore from Buena Vista down to La Ribera.   Some of the other species we saw this week included Sailfish, pompano, jacks, lady fish, and one wahoo.  That’s it for this week my friends.  Until next week!  Eddie Dalmau/Baja’s Van Wormer Resorts
